Nearly 1,000,000 people each year are affected by traumatic brain injury. Victims of traumatic brain injury, or TBI, are often left with little to no chance of ever living a normal life again.

In the event of traumatic brain injury, the brain is left in a debilitated state, taking an effect on multiple physical, psychological, and cognitive skills. Limitations can range from lack of balance and coordination, to affecting the victim’s strength and endurance. Some cases of serious traumatic brain injury can completely take away a victims control over movement. Cognitive limitations can vary with each case. Problems with memory, language comprehension and production, and consciousness can occur. Other problems such as depression, anxiety, and bipolar disorder can occur with traumatic brain injury as well.

Damage to the brain can affect the way the entire body operates, and in some cases can even be fatal. There are different ways in which damage can be inflicted on the brain, whether from a physical blow, disease, lack of oxygen, or poisoning.

Some types of traumatic brain injury include:

  • Tearing—Tearing can occur when the fragile tissues of the brain are ripped apart, usually by a physical blow to the head. Tears in the delicate brain tissues are not always detectable by x-rays or MRI’s, and can go completely unnoticed for long periods of time.
  • Swelling—Swelling is common for traumatic brain injury victims. Unlike the skin, and the tissues beneath it, the skull does not allow the brain to expand, nor pressure to release, causing the brain to hit against the hard bone of the skull, causing even more damage.
  • Bruising—Bruising is caused by a heavy blow to the skull. Blood vessels inside the brain are ruptured, causing blood to flow to areas of the brain that are unsuitable for such an amount of blood. Bruising often causes paralysis or other permanent forms of damage. If you or a loved one has been affected by traumatic brain injury, it is important that you call an experienced TBI lawyer as soon as possible!
